But apart from the photographs submitted, the MRO has the ability to give us much more information

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter takes from their instruments some of the most powerful cameras that have been sent into space. And thanks to them we receive suggestive pictures m&m direct from the surface of Mars to help us better understand the geophysics of this world.
But apart from the photographs submitted, the MRO has the ability to give us much more information invisible to the human eye. For example, the CRISM instrument, using a technique called reflectance spectroscopy, is able to "detect" minerals on the Martian surface.
These minerals can detect the presence of water (hydrated minerals). But we can also meet with precious stones. For example, in the header image of this post, the MRO has been found in the central peak of a crater a form of hydrated silica (pink areas) better known on Earth as opal. This opal is of great importance to scientists. First, because often these gems have a high water content. And second, because on our planet found fossils and other signs of active biology in these gemstones.
This opal detected on Mars probably does not possess the necessary quality jewelry to carve it, but it's an interesting record of the history of Mars. So its value is much higher than a diamond.
The CRISM spectrometer has identified the minerals present in the south of the crater Baldet. The colors in this image are not what we would see with the naked eye, since the photograph was taken in the infrared.
